Flower Pounding and Natural Dyeing Workshop with Diane Williams

In “Flower Pounding and Natural Dyeing Workshop” Teaching Artist Diane Williams's workshop focused on the eco-printing technique of flower pounding using leaves and flowers to create vibrant patterns on fabric.

Participants learned the historical and cultural aspects of natural dyeing, connecting with indigenous practices. Natural dyes, derived from plants and minerals, offer eco-friendly alternatives, avoiding harmful components found in synthetic dyes. Diane shared her connection to Filipino culture, where pigments from nature hold symbolic and medicinal importance.

The workshop involved hands-on flower pounding with pre-mordanted fabric provided. Activities included pigment extraction, understanding material interactions with natural fibers, and incorporating eco-printing for transferring flower pigments.
