ABOUT US: Side Street Projects (SSP) is a mobile, artist-run organization that supports artists, projects, and programs to foster leadership through socially engaged art and a DIY (Do it yourself) & DIT (Do it together) ethos.

We are devoted to community-centered artists through community-led programming that promotes creativity, well-being, and the potential for collective growth.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR: SSP hires Teaching Artists to work with students in schools and multigenerational audiences within our communities. Priority is given to teachers who have the potential to teach across several programs.

In partnership with the Noah Purifoy Foundation, SSP is actively searching for two enthusiastic and talented Teaching Artists to join us in delivering the NPF Urban Arts Initiative curriculum to eight schools in the South Los Angeles area this year. The successful candidates will be responsible for providing students with a comprehensive understanding of Noah Purifoy's inspiring history, accomplishments, art & overall legacy. They will also lead students to visit Noah Purifoy's Outdoor Museum in Joshua Tree, followed by an engaging in-class art-making lesson. Ideal for Teaching Artists passionate about art education and making a difference in young learners' lives.

Teaching Artist Training (approx. 13 hours):

  • (5 hours): Zoom Training (approx. 1.5 hours)/Curriculum Review at your own time (approx 3.5)

    (8 hours): Noah Purifoy Outdoor Museum site visit (if time permits; otherwise, training will be hands-on during a school field trip)

Time commitment per school (*approx. 21.5 hours)

* Pre and Post Art-Making lessons will vary depending on the class size and the school's schedule; the NPF Teaching Artists will be notified of all scheduling as soon as possible.

  • (3 hours): In-class Pre-Lesson

  • (Approx. 12 hours): Noah Purifoy Outdoor Museum (approx. 6:45 am-6:30 pm) 

  • (3 hours): In-class Post Art-making Lesson (1 of 2) 

  • (3 hours): In-class Post Art-making Lesson (2 of 2)

  • (0.5 hours): Teaching Artist Post-Lesson Debrief

Qualifications:

  • Have prior experience in teaching and working with youth in facilitating Arts Education. (We also welcome artists who may have yet to gain direct teaching experience but can express their strong desire to learn and develop a teaching/mentoring practice in art education.)

  • Use of assemblage in personal art practice.

  • Knowledge of the history of the assemblage art movement in Los Angeles.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening, empathy, and clear communication, are highly valued.

  • Exhibit professionalism, reliability, and a strong work ethic. 

  • Ability to adapt to different teaching environments, value diverse communities, and work within their resources.

  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to arrive on time to work opportunities within South Los Angeles.

  • Thrive in bright, bustling, and energetic environments.

  • Interest or experience with Trauma-Informed Care practices.

  • Experience working with *Justice-Impacted communities

*Justice-impacted refers to people and communities that face violence and/or harm from systemic oppression (i.e., oppressions in the form of race, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship status, ability, class, religion, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the history of the assemblage art movement in Los Angeles.

  • Valid California Driver’s License

  • Have the physical ability to perform tasks that may require prolonged standing, sitting, and other activities necessary to perform job duties. 

  • Minimally must lift 20 pounds without assistance; may lift over 25 pounds with or without assistance.

  • Technological adept for administrative tasks on an app or website, including scheduling and availability, timesheets, etc.

  • Interest in teaching within our other programs or leading a Skillshare of your expertise for community programming is a plus.

  • Have reliable transportation and the ability to arrive on time to work opportunities throughout Los Angeles County, Pasadena and surrounding areas.

Compensation:

The base pay is $27 per hour, with a guaranteed 3-hour teaching minimum (training, prep, and clean-up time are paid). Partial mileage reimbursement is available for teaching opportunities.
