Mythical Glove Puppets

  • Santa Catalina Branch Library 999 East Washington Boulevard Pasadena, CA, 91104 United States (map)

In this workshop, the participants will learn the history of Taiwanese glove puppetry and construct imaginary mythical glove puppets with fabrics and clay. Glove puppetry is a tradition in Chinese and Taiwanese culture to tell stories and folktales with characters ranging from animal to human and animal hybrid forms, and to human beings. The participants also have a chance to write a short story according to the glove puppets they created, and will have the opportunity to perform in the mobile glove puppet theater at the end of the workshop. In tradition, the storylines often portray moral concepts. While creating our own imaginary mythical glove puppets, we can share our new stories, and the symbolism behind the narrative, and also ask ourselves questions about what our identities mean to us. This workshop is designed for kids 6 to 12 years old.
