In 2007 Side Street Projects and 10 other Pasadena cultural institutions embarked on the pilot of the My Masterpieces Program. My Masterpieces: Discovering Art in My Community is a standards-based, supplemental elementary curriculum for the visual arts that connects Pasadena Unified School District (P.U.S.D.) students with the cultural resources of their community. Other approved My Masterpieces partner organizations include The Armory, The Norton Simon Museum, & The Huntington Library. We’ve collaborated with the District to develop a specialized Alternate Routes curriculum that is vetted to meet California Math & Science Core Standards and we’re committed to add 4 schools each year until we are serving the entire district which includes 1,400 3rd graders by 2013. The 3rd grade curriculum includes 2 classroom lessons, a field trip to the Gamble House, and 4 hours aboard one of our newly renovated mobile woodworking studios, where students design and fabricate a functional object. In 2010, P.U.S.D. was recognized by the California School Board Association with the “Golden Bell Award” for the My Masterpieces Program.

Mobile Fabrication Studios (The Trailers)

In the Summer of 2011, we built out 2 new mobile trailer classrooms to accommodate increased program demand. One is now completely dedicated to serving P.U.S.D. 3rd graders through the My Masterpieces program. Like the Woodworking Bus, these trailers house individual kid sized woodworking stations custom designed by Kurt Stern of the Art Center College of Design woodshop. Each station is equipped with hand tools, adjustable workbenches, and materials: everything needed to create a multitude of functional woodworking projects. In the Fall of 2011, LA based Artist Jonathan Stofenmacher received a grant from the City of Pasadena Department of Cultural affairs to create a mural on this dedicated trailer.
