HERESHOW

About our Mobile Education Program:

Since 1997, we have taught design and fabrication through a mobile tool-based woodworking curriculum to literally thousands of children throughout L.A. County. Alternate Routes’ goal is to teach children creative problem solving and how to use tools safely, effectively, and (ultimately) independent of adult assistance. All classes are held in renovated transit buses and trailers where students learn about art, design, and engineering using only hand tools, raw materials, and their imagination. Professional artists teach all classes. The program has now expanded to include other tool based curriculum including sewing and electronics.

Class Descriptions:

Woodworking Classes – We teach children how to use tools safely, effectively and (ultimately) independent of adult assistance. Kids make a variety of projects that increase in complexity as they progress through the program. They accumulate a working knowledge of techniques like as sanding, sawing, shaping, drilling, setting screws, using clamps, hammering, and incising.

Artist-Inspired Classes – This is a new offering that will bridge our contemporary artists with our education programming. Drawing on art practices from on-site artists and our Teach Artists that use their unique skill set to create their artwork, utilizing a tool-based curriculum. Skill set will include building armatures, sewing, and design.
